ESA – Employment and Support Allowance
ESA offers people who are ill or disabled:
- financial support if they are unable to work
- personalised help so they can work if they are able to
Individuals can apply for ESA if they are employed, self-employed or unemployed. The can bring an ESA appeal if wrongly refused.
People may be transferred to ESA, which is paid at a higher rate than Jobseeker’s Allowance, if they have been claiming other benefits, like Income Support or Incapacity Benefit.
Those who are deemed eligible to receive ESA do not have to ‘sign on’, show they are actively seeking employment or required to attend a voluntary work programme.
